“Come on, then,
And give’t me in mine ear.”
There exist in the world ancient lullabies that put children to sleep with frightening tales, which prepare them for the harsh existence ahead.
To me “The Winter’s Tale” is such a dark song for adults – it is about a human who is lost and destroys his own life and the life of his closest kin; it is about the period that has been given to us before the branch breaks and before the cradle falls down; it is about those human passions that sicken the mind and about the atrocities of that sick mind; it is about children and what we leave to them as heritage; it is about us changing the bright dream into a nightmare, not fate; it is about “human does not please me anymore” and about one’s destiny as a “story told by a madman”; it is about the never coming redemption; it is about the miracle of forgiveness as a unique and ultimate opportunity to break the spiral of evil, so that man can raise himself again and deep in the mud to look at the stars.
“The Winter’s Tale” – the last miracle play of a genius, around whom we can only hover – both frightened and delighted, to catch a glimpse of a little something through the cracks of the fence and to dream about what we have seen there.
